My daughter has a umbilical hernia? Have you experience this?

She is 7 yrs old and we discovered last year that she has a hernia. Her bellyon protrudes at the top. Has any else had a child with this same problem and if so what did they do. My daughter's pediatrician just wants to watch it? I didn't know if that is normal procedure?
