I am wanting the name of a 30s/40s movie. I think it could have been a shirley temple movie, not sure.?

This movie was black and white made in 1930s-40s. About a lil girl who in hardship living in a drafted old room(attic). No mother, father may have gone to war or she was an orphan, but don't remember all the details. Well she befriends a old man (possible artist). It was dead of winter and freezing, the lil girl got sick and she said that she would p away when the very last leave fell off the tree outside her window. In the night the old artist friend went out and hand painted leave(s) on the tree/side of building(?) so she would live, but he died himself of exposure. Anyone at all out there know the name of this wonderful, but very old movie? I would love to find it and see this movie again. It was a memorable movie from my childhood. I had thought it was called Autumn Leaves, but net turned up nothing. Thank you all in advance of giving this a think.
