Human Civilization on a cosmic scale?

If Humans did spread out from Earth eventually, what would it look like? I myself am picturing planets loosely organized and largely independent from each other, given the distance between stars and obvious command and control issues. A loose confederation of autonomous governments separated by light years. What do you guys think?
