How to make nail varnish last without a top or bottom coat?

I want to paint my nails but I don't have a top or bottom coat. Usually I would go out but the doctor placed me on bed rest yesterday and my husband won't be home until late as he's in meetings at work. If it makes any difference I'm using a matt finish nail varnish.
